Norway lifts self-imposed export ban on whale products

16.01.2001;
The Norwegian government today announced the lifting of the self-imposed export ban on minke whale products.

"This is a victory for common sense and the sustainable management of our marine resources," says secretary of the High North Alliance, Rune Frovik.

"We expect some protests from animal rights groups, which will no doubt use this as an opportunity to raise funds by claiming that this will be a disaster for the world's whales," says Frovik.

The export ban has resulted in several hundred tonnes of blubber being stockpiled. The Norwegians have a palate only for the meat.

The trade will be controlled trough an unprecedented DNA trade control scheme.

The whale products will mainly be exported to Japan.
