Members
Any country can
be a member of the IWC by becoming a contracting party to the
International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW). The IWC now
counts 45 members, as San Marino and Benin have just joined.
In 2001, 37
member nations attended the meeting with full voting rights. Iceland
participated, but was not allowed to vote. Also Russia and Senegal
participated but without the right to vote as they had arrears in their
membership dues.
Costa Rica,
Peru and Senegal did not participate. Their rights to vote have been suspended because of arrears in
membership dues.
