I think the site is well put together and informative. I have found no other site that is as comprehensive in framing the whaling debate. I am looking for information about the implementation of the RMP. What happened at the latest IWC meeting? How are the prowhaling nations proposing to implement/monitor/regulate future whaling operations (should the RMP be implemented)? Any answers or clues as to where I would find such answers would be much appreciated.

I think that the site is very well done and I definantlyyy found the information interesting and usefull but I would have liked to have seen a more balanced argument both for and agianst whaling. Many of the pro-whaling pionts that were made are very true but by giving such a clearly one sided veiw on the issue I think you are not doing justice to the complexity of the issue. I just have to visit this site over and over again. After seeing the sinking of Bastesens FISHINGBOAT the Morild, i think it's time for the Norwegians to fight back. A site like highnorth, with informative information is probably the best way to do that, but it does not work with all people... There are some people in the world that you just can't tell information, because they are to brainwashed/stupid/crazy to listen to it. In history we can see great examples of these peoples work, like for exampel mr Saddam Hussain, Hitler and Stalin. The one thing we have learned from these peoples work, is that they don't listen to whatever you try to tell them. Maybe we Norwegians should start a group specialised in sinking such terrorist peoples wessels. Or an even better idea, we could start a found collection to set up a reward for sinking SeaSheppard's wessels, the problem is just that we Norwegians are to peacefull for doing such a terroristic thing... I just wonder another thing, what in earth has the Norwegian 20-30 active neo-nazist (witch are allmost all in jail) to do with whale and seal hunting, has the people fighting against Norwegian sealing and whaling lost their last mind, or what... At last i would like to say that i will still eat whale meat, with even more and more plesure. It's sad that we didn't got Paul Watson in jail, so he could taste some to... Eat whales, save the cows !!!

I propose that the United Nations pass a resolution legalizing the complement of a seal hunt - an international hunt for Norwegian, Canadian and Japanese Whalers, Sealers and their Government Supporters. (This would be approved by all countries to make it legal, of course).
Just to make it fair, the participating countries would ship the Whalers, Sealers and Government Supporters out to the Arctic zones and dump them, ( stripped of their clothing ) onto ice floes. Then before they freeze to death ( we always must keep this a humane operation, of course, and those are NOT tears of pain, they are simply the way some primates excrete salt from their primate eyelids- that statement is BACKED UP by our scientific research teams, and is not an excuse for the slobbering greed and cruelty of the Fish and Marine Mammal Industry), all the countries would have a happy time with their newly modernized "Norwegian Whaler and Sealer & Government friends Boats", skinning the whalers, seals and Norwegian officials alive, impaling them on boat hooks, castrating them, and generally having an uproarious time of it observing their cries of agony and pain, just like what happens in the actual seal hunts!!!

I agree with your viewpoints. I, unlike many of my American collegues, agree to a sustainable hunt of minkw whales by Norway. I was also involved in the NILS Minke whale survey during 1995, conducted by the Institute of Marine Research (out of Bergen).

I have just completed a successful three month campaign to oppose illegal Norwegian whaling. The Sea Shepherd Conservation is very satisfied with the results of my recent imprisonment in the Netherlands. We were able to use the situation to focus international media attention on illegal whaling. In addition, we used the situation to successfully establish the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in the Netherlands. Our membership base has increased especially in Holland and Germany. My imprisonment was also an excellent fund-raising opportunity and has increased our anti-whaling war chest significantly. Norway has served me with additional charges and we are looking forward to exploiting this additional opportunity for publicity and support. I think that 1997 has been a good campaign year and eighty days in a comfortable Dutch prison can hardly be considered as a punishment. During my time in prison I received and answered 1153 letters of support and completed work on my new book on sealing. As Mohandas Ghandi once wrote "prison is an excellent opportunity to catch up on reading and writing and to get a little rest." In the prison itself I recruited three prison guards and two prisoners as Sea Shepherd members. Finally I would like to thank Norwegian authorities for their cooperation in assisting us in a great and profitable campaign. We will never cease to oppose the illegal and barbaric practise of whaling in Norway.

Many today and many more in the future will regard the killing of whales for food in the same way that most now consider the killing of humans for food. Questions of sustainable yields seem psychotic when applied to humans, and also to whales. Personally I find cannibalism LESS offensive than the eating of whale meat.

First of all I'd like to say thank you for a great site. I'm studying in a country (Australia) with an extremely narrowminded attitude towards whaling, and it was really nice to see a page like this. A well-made website, allthough a lot of frustration shines through. Regardless, I find it absolutly necessary that there be a grassroots-level corrective to eco-fascism. NGOs are often a positive force but as some of them develop and become a political force without responsibility and without the need to answer to the people, they lose their democratic legitimacy. I feel this to be the case with Greenpeace. And thus I also feel that the High North Alliance of ordinary people living in coastal communities is an important force for democracy and reason.

A very fine site, who reminds me that human was born as a predator, and not as a gras eating cow. I think the world would be a better place to live, when humans understand their roots, where we came from, and where we belong in the nature. I don`t understand why people can`t try to live like humans, and not as cows. Maybe Paul Watson and his fellows should consern more about sticking their fingers in "Mother earth", and see how the nature was built, instead of setting humankind over it all. If all people became vegetarians, the earth would be a terrible place for the starving animals. Thank you for this great site, made for people with a helthy sign of life.

I'm extremely upset to read the garbage from Sea Shepherd these days. They claim that Paul Watson will be killed if he is extradited to Norway!!!! And on a press conference April 15 several Hollywood film stars say they are afraid of the proud man's life. The actress Linda Blair said: "We have every reason to believe that if Paul Watson is turned over to the Norwegian Government we must fear for his life! Norway will stop at nothing, including killing our own fellow man in order to pursue their barbaric slaughtering of whales. Just last week, two Norwegian activists had their throats slit and as a result one of these two men is dead!"
How can people tell lies like this? Is it the violated american society that makes these people think that all the world is like downtown LA?

I would like to say that I really enjoy this site. Now, what is going on with this Captain Paul Watson? He's in all over the news here and it sounds like something's going on in Norway that shouldn't. Something about a trial for him when he wasn't there in the court room and something about Germany letting him go, but Holland picking him up. Could someone explain to me what is happening with this? I am currently studying international law, and find this case very peculiar...

As a long time resident of Northern Canada I have seen the tragic results of those who so vigourously defend the "rights" of marine mammals. They have devestated a way of life and paid no heed at all to the "rights" of a people to live in dignity. I wear my sealskin vest and anarak with pride, especially when I am in the company of those who have been brainwashed by well-meaning but sadly mis-informed animal rights advocates. Folks living in big cities have no concept, nor do they wish to even consider that there are other people inhabiting this planet who are much more in tune with "nature" and who have a much greater respect for their environment. To those folks I say, leave your cities and come and LIVE in our areas for a while and then your eyes will be opened. As for me, I'll continue to live in the Arctic where I can be in harmony with nature and where I can be away from cities where nature exists only in zoos and parks. Great site folks. I'll be back to visit again.

I understand that Norway refuses to carry forth with my request that the government seek extradition. I did inform the Lofoten police back in 1993 that both Lisa Distefano and I would voluntarily travel to Norway but first we requested an extradition hearing in the United States. The reason for this was to allow us the opportunity to bring the issue of illegal whaling before the U.S. Courts. This hearing would be our right as citizens and residents of the United States. It is obvious that Norway had something to hide by refusing to request extradition. So this means that we have scuttled your ships, engaged your Coast Guard and cost both whalers and government considerable sums of money and yet Norway does not want to seek legal redress. We were ready to go to court on the Andenes incident in June 1996 when the government dropped the case. If Lisa and I are terrorists as you constantly keep saying then why are we free to live in the United States and free to travel to Europe, including by the way Scandinanvia inclusive of Norway. Name calling is all well and good but we live in a country where a criminal is defined as such by virtue of a conviction in a Court of law under due process. Norway has not granted due process and refuses to address our actions in their own courts and through the proper international avenues. The bottom line is that we are still free and still active in our woudlwide opposition to whaling

Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that lowbrow, knuckledraggers like you exist and are being vocal about your "right" to hunt, kill, slaughter, butcher (you choose) marine mammals. I suppose it never occured to you that every creature on this planet did not evolve for the sole purpose of being killed or exploited by man. If it had I wouldn't have any reason to write this. It truly amazes me that anyone would even consider killing anything as magnificent as a whale, or any other creature for that matter. You would think, or at least hope, that mankind would have evolved beyond the neanderthal urge to bash everything it sees over the head and drag it back to the cave. Apparently, and you are a testament to this, that is not the case. I guess those of us who are more enlightened and actually give a damn about the other creatures we share this planet with can only hope that your primitive, ape-like kind will soon reach the extinction that is long overdue and leave the rest of Earth's inhabitants alone.

I got to this sight due to my subsistence hunting abilities. I am from the Bering Sea where all sea mammals pass through. We just can resist catching them to eat. We grew up on these animals for many, many centuries. Animal rights activists seem to be trying to stop us from hunting our precious food. If we are stopped from hunting it, all the food will have left is store bought food. A lot of the store bought food in the extreme "High North" are rotten. Red meat, steak, pork chops, ground beaf and other stuff come in blue and when eaten has a terrible taste and has a blue color. The bread that we get is moldy. Some can foods are expired. So we must continue our supply of food of whales and walruses. The Greenpeace logo: Save the Whales, "Hell with the Humans" is pretty discouraging to us. We also hear about starving people in Africa, China, and even here in the US. Why don't the Animal Rights Activists save them? Quit crying for the Animals and listen to the crying of the hungry and sick people of the world. Thank You....

Hi! What a site! There is so much information out there. I would like to know what any of the elders or spiritual advisors feel about hunting 'endangered species'. As stewards of the land, in keeping with the wisdom for protection future generations, we have a responsibility to the future generations of not only our people, but to all people. We have a responsibility to protect the survival of the bowhead whales, and any other specie for future generations.
