This is the first time I've ever go into this web site ana I find it very interesting what every body sees the way they see is the way it should be.I fell that it nice to read some information or story that is close to my culture and every day life style.

Have a good Chrismas and a good New Year.

Just south of Santa's home town.

Browse through the messages in this guestbook, and see how many messages contain phrases like: WHALE MEAT IS GOOD AND THAT'S WHY WE HAVE TO KILL WHALES AND THAT'S WHY THIS SITE IS GOOD.

Well, I think whale-meat is tasty and good as well. But I honestly think we can't solve any of our future problems and conflicts if we don't go beyond this stage in our thinking.

And why not publish some "alternative" articles as well? Or, can I publish anything as long as the article is called "THE IMMENSE STUPIDITY OF WHALES AND DOLPHINS"?

Again, sorry for the rhetoric edge, but I still mean what I'm saying.

dag.vongraven@fm-st.sri.telemax.no

Complements for a nicely and consistently run site. My main critique is about the predictability of its contents. A slightly philosophical comment...

WHY do I never hear pro-whalers, at this site or other places, say they think whales are nice animals, that they're nice to watch OR that at least some whales are intelligent, instead of ALWAYS hearing that ALL whales are STUPID, whale-watching is HARMFUL etc. etc?

And, WHY do I never hear anti-whalers say they enjoy they live in a diverse world where it's possible to respect mother nature AND STILL kill an animal and eat it, without having to be an Indian living 100 years ago? Or that they see it as a positive thing that we manage to live from what nature leaves us, AND MEAN IT?

Listening to the whaling debate is like constantly reading the headlines a tabloid newspaper. Always rhetorical, contributing none whatsoever to clarification of people's minds, only making sure that the fronts stay where they are.

WHY is it that we always place our opponents in any topic at the very opposite end of the scale, and that we this way let us polarise - good or bad, black or white, up or down... Instead of admitting that the world is a complex place and that it is possible to enjoy, respect and work with, watch and observe animals with enthusiasm AND AT THE SAME TIME feel that it's still possible to live from what the nature gives us, WITHOUT destroying it. AND MOST IMPORTANT, that we spread this "attitude" to other people. This instead of placing oneself in one camp, once and for ever.

Sorry, this was meant to be a short, none-rethorical one. Instead it turned out long, with a slightly rhetoric touch. But I mean every word. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Highnorth publications are written in high standard professional manner. I always enjoy the home-page. Let me offer my new slogan for whaling..."Save the minkes and starve blues", that is applicable to pre-predator relationship in the ecosystem in the Antarctic. How about another one from Japan, "Save the minke and starve fishermen". Best to you all in the Highnorth.

I think you have a real nice site. It nice to see that there are folk out there that dont believe all the bullshit put out by greenspeace types.I fished tuna for years on seiners , the do gooders have the public brainwashed as you well know. We used to go out of way to back the net down to save the porpoise. How can there data be acurate in the least way when most of the time the government observers didnt even no where they were on the ocean. I dont no what happened , all i no is that the do gooders really fucked up the american tuna fleet. Do you no how many american seiners are still operating ? you dont see hardly any in san diego and the ones you do see are for sale. I glad you put a web page up in defense of the fisherman. thanks alot . al voight

Oct 18 and I'm behind the times. This is my first time on the NET and I really like it. I hesistated trying it before now because I thought I'd like it too much and spend all my time surfing. Anyway I'm looking for info on Grey Seal contraception and just general info on these mammals. Your web site is great, very simple and easy to follow. I will be back again!! Thanks.

I think your site is great. Eventhough some people dont seem to take the point, that even if lots of whale species trully are endangered, the Minky whale, which the norwegians hunt, are numerous, most people seem to get your information. (That IS a long sentence). The only truly good argument against norwegian whale hunting is the signal effect it gives. I like Karl Gustav Gjertsens work a lot, but his drawings could have been worked upon in Photoshop (for instance) to achive better clarity and contrast. Well, keep your harpoons working!

Your page is OK!

It's a relief that we norwegians have found a forum where we can express our view, as effecient as the anti-whaling organizations!

Internet and the WWW are two powerful distribution chanels for such International debatet issues as the whale- and sealhunting are!

I hope that the High North alliance can take advantage of this web-site, by achieving understanding for the norwegian traditons, as well as the faroes, icelandics etc. etc.!

Keep up the good work!!!!!

Just a note to say that 1973-76 I was Chief, Fishery Data Centre, FAO Roma, and had much interaction with John Gulland & Sidney Holt. I computerised Dormehl Gertenbach's shop (FAO Yearbook of Fisheries...) and tried to organise the data for the international fishery commissions (ICNAF, CECAL,ICSEAF,ICES,GFCM,IPFC,etc) to provide catch per unit effort info to properly manage the world's fishery stocks. Law of Sea came along and all was for naught.

I am interested in your viewpoints as at the school where I teach, our year 6 pupils do a research unit on whales and then go on an excursion to Hervey Bay, north of Brisbane in Queensland, where we live. They whale watch the Humpback whales and collect a lot of information about whales, whaling - for and against tc. I enjoyed the arguments presented on your argumentation page and will present them to my students to get them thinking about as many sides of the debate as possible. We Australians are only just awakening to the MS Voyeur argument and have been very strong in this view. Other views are not so readily seen, as we are along way from your country and do not ahve a history of eating whale products even though we may have used their by products without knowing. Thanks for the information.

Good site. But there is one thing missing from your site. All the arguments about proud traditions and misses the essential point that now the whales are mostly endangered species. To quote a bunch of newage thinkers as offering reasons to save whales seems a slight disservice to the truth of the matter. Why not add some quotes from Farley Mowat, "Sea of Slaughter" and even from your arch-nemesis Paul Watson about the fact that several species of whales are near extinction. I spent 2 years up in Inuvialuit beluga country, and watched the whales vanish from several factors. Sure the people need their traditions, but what if the whale is vanishing and the people's original tradition has gone from skin boats to boston whalers, and harpoons to assault rifles? Anyway, you get the idea.

Generally, very good. Information on the subject of whaling is sorely needed as most information available (particularly from anti-whaling groups) is strongly biased.

As a mathematician having worked with statistics, there is one thing I missed: a closer info on the statistical method used for estimating the number of whales, and particularly a descriptoon of the error made (what kind of error, what is done to reduce the risk of further errors, etc.). Maybe even make the data avaliable.

Best wishes for the site.

This is an excellent site. I didn't have time to read more than a fraction of the material in your library, so I must come back. I loved your games - I won the argument game on the first try, but I'm afraid that if the test were marked, I would fail it miserably. I find it interesting to note that when estimating whale populations, I guessed consistently too low. This just goes to show how effective anti-whaling propaganda is at shaping public opinion!

I have but one significant criticism, and that is that I think the pale green background of many of the pages is too drab and boring. Your other backgrounds are simple but interesting, and I think something in the same vein would be appropriate for the Home Page. That's just my opinion though.

Stephen DeGrace

I'm very glad to see this page. While many wild animals are utilised by many nations including anti-whaling/sealing countries, harvesting of some animals becomes the target of attack. I think this phenomenon is based on some groups' desire to impose value system based on the preference of animals, and also on public view which was formed by mis-leading propaganda of such groups.

So, it is very welcome that you can show the different side of the story directly, without being distorted by media reports.
