- CITES, the Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, entered into force on 1
July 1975 and now has a membership of 145 countries. These countries act by banning
commercial international trade in an agreed list of endangered species and by regulating
and monitoring trade in others that might become endangered.

The International Whaling
Commission- (IWC) was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of
Whaling which was signed in Washington DC on 2 December 1946.The purpose of the Convention
is to provide for the proper conservation of whale stocks and thus make possible the
orderly development of the whaling industry. The main duty of the IWC is to keep under
review and revise as necessary the measures laid down in the Schedule to the Convention
which govern the conduct of whaling throughout the world
- The North Atlantic
Marine Mammal Commission- (NAMMCO) is an
international body for cooperation on the conservation, management and study of marine
mammals in the North Atlantic. The NAMMCO Agreement, which was signed in Nuuk, Greenland
on 9 April 1992 by Norway, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, focuses on modern
approaches to the study of the marine ecosystem as a whole, and to understanding better
the role of marine mammals in this system. NAMMCO provides a mechanism for cooperation on
conservation and management for all species of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and
pinnipeds (seals and walruses) in the region, many of which have not before been covered
by such an international agreement.
