Long-finned Pilot Whale
(Globicephala melas)

 

Distribution: Temperate and sub-Arctic waters of the North Atlantic.

Population and Catches: A 1989 survey covering most of the species' range in the eastern North Atlanticgave an estimate of 778,000. Hunted regularly in the Faroes and to a lesser extent also in Greenland. Records dating back to 1584 show a long-term average annual catch in the Faroes of about 850.
