Beluga or White Whale (Delphinapterus leucas)

 

Distribution: Arctic and northern waters of the North Atlantic. Especially abundant in the Davis Strait-Baffin Bay Region and the Barents Sea, Kara Sea and White Sea.

Population and Catches:The Canada-Greenland population is estimated at 20-30,000. The size of the East Greenland-Spitsbergen population is unknown., but is probably under 30,000. Hunted by Inuit in Canada and Greenland, with the combined harvests totalling about 800 annually.
