Northern Bottlenose Whale Whale
(Hyperoodon ampullatus)

 

Distribution: Across the North Atlantic, with concentrations west and east of Iceland and west of the Faroes.

Population and Catches: An estimate based on 1987 and 1989 survey data puts the populationin the north-eastern North Atlantic at about 40,000. The meat of the bottlenose whales which strand in the Faroes (up to 3 a year) is eaten and the oil is used as a local medicinal ointment.
