As a result of the EU Fur Regulation, a number of hunting and gathering communities are in danger of
extinction. This is in conflict with the government’s strategy in support of the indigenous peoples of the
world ... and in violation of the fundamental rights of the peoples involved, says a letter to the Danish
Minister of the Environment, Mr. Sven Auken, signed by WWF Denmark together with three other
organisations working for human rights and indigenous people’s rights.
The letter points out that the EU ban on leghold traps will lead to an increase in the use of toxins in the fight
against vermin and that his will have unacceptable consequences for the environment. In the letter, the Minister
of the Environment is requested to contact the EU Commission in order to ensure that changes be made to the
Regulation. In his reply, Auken merely asks the organisations to contact the Commission directly. According to
Greenland radio, however, he later approached the French EU chairmanship in order to postpone the regulation.
