A survey carried out by professor T. Bjørndal of the Norwegian School of Economics and Administration in Bergen shows that Norwegian export industries have made losses of somewhere between £550,000 and £890.000 as a result of the Save-the-Whale movement’s boycott campaigns in 1992 and 1993. Greenpeace has previously distributed a press release which they claim documents a loss of contracts worth approximately £40 million. “We have at our disposal ... information showing that a number of the alleged contract cancellations mantioned in the press release do not conform to reality,” says the School of Economics and Administration report.
The losses are largely connected to Britain and Germany. The report makes provisions for losses that have not been reported and those which are difficult to connect with the boycotts.
The travel industry has experienced major increases and Norway has gained new shares of the market primarily in Germany, but also in Britain. 1993 was a good year in general for Norwegian exports.
The survey on which the report is based was requisitioned by the Norwegian Foreign Office.
