At long last, Greenpeace appears to be making an effort to open dialogue with whalers as well as Norwegian citizens on the whaling issue. As part of this effort, it has sent its members a letter and asked them to sign it and post it to a Norwegian.

The High North Alliance welcomes such attempts at dialogue, and has challenged Greenpeace to show that it is sincere. We have asked Greenpeace Germany to post the High North Allliance response to the Greenpeace letter on its web site. We have also informed Greenpeace that we will help its supporters find "pen pals" among Norwegian supporters of whaling if they wish. We encourage you to share your comments and opinions on the Greenpeace/High North Alliance correspondence by clicking the "your contribution" button to the left.

For dialogue to be constructive and meaningful, it must be based on openness, with both sides spelling out their standpoints and the values on which they are based. For its part, Greenpeace has declared that it is opposed in principle to all commercial harvesting of whales, seals and kangaroos, even though some of the species in question are far from endangered. In the High North Alliance's letter to Greenpeace, we ask Greenpeace to provide the background to its stance of opposing the commercialisation of any of these wild species. We look forward to being able to provide Greenpeace's response here.

We will be happy to publish any further correspondence engendered by the Greenpeace letter, from both Norwegians and Greenpeace supporters. Just send us a copy of your letter, hna@highnorth.no
